工作經驗-work or working experience?

問：一個英國人告訴我說，「工作經驗」是work experience；另一個則說，work experience是泛指工作經驗，working experience則是專指某種工作經驗。先生認為怎樣？

答：「工作經驗」應說work experience而不是working  experience，這一點拙欄年前談過，這裏不妨詳細一點再談一次。

文法上，working experience並沒有錯。「工作時間」和「工人」，英文也的確可以叫做working hours、workingman或work hours、workman，但「工作經驗」習慣上只說work experience。

假如說working experience，人家可能誤解作「足以致用的經驗」，因為working可解作「足以致用的」，例如：He had a working knowledge of French, which was a great help when we toured all over France（他懂得點法語，一般情況足以應付，我們遍遊法國時，因此方便不少）。

「某一種工作經驗」也絕對可以稱為work experience。Tata MaGraw-Hill出版社的一本求職面試指南How to Succeed at Interviews第三章教人寫履歷表，說履歷按年分全部列出，有一個好處：It brings the employer's attention to the fact that you have relevant work experience in a particular area or industry（可使雇主看到你在某方面或某行業有工作經驗）。這裏顯然不是「泛指工作經驗」，但還是用work experience，不用working。留意履歷表上「工作經驗」一欄，也可稱為work history（就業史）或work chronology（就業年表）。
